Things that coaches never say

Being an athlete is pretty fun at times. The things that make it not so fun is the coaches. Student-athletes can go out every day and bust their tails and still not feel good about anything. It is hard when you do everything that you think is right and do it with one hundred percent effort, and you have your coach chewing you out because you are not "good" enough. I have always wondered: what is "good" enough to them? I will probably never know the answer to that question, but I do know what not to say to your players. I have played sports for ten years now and I have never heard a coach tell his player(s) that they did a great job, or even motivate them in a positive way at all. I guess coaches think they always have to be negative towards people to "light their fires." I have created a list of things that a couch should never say to their athletes. With this list I hope to shine some light to prove to people that playing sports is not as easy as it may seem.

  1. "You suck!"
  2. "You're the worse athlete I have ever seen."
  3. "You're too fat to play football."
  4. "You all are softer than baby poop."
  5. "You are not getting any better."
  6. "You'll never play doing it like that."
  7. "If you ever get to play (which I doubt) you will get someone hurt."
  8. "Why are you even here still?"
  9. "I will beat your brains in with my fist if you mess up again."
  10. "I haven't even thought of you as a usable player."
  11. "Sometimes catching my attention is more important than an injury if you want to play."
  12. "I am giving up on you."
The list above is not things I have heard personally, just things that coaches should never say. For those who read this and are thinking about being a coach, please use better ways to motivate and "light the fires" of your athletes.

  1. I agree with what you are saying because I want to be a coach and I don't think downgrading you're players is any way to a good season. Being positive is the best way to grow a player. building their confidence is a way to build you're program. And, if a coach has said any of that to you I'm pretty sure they can lose their jobs.

  2. Gotta love coaches motivating us with one degrading comment at a time.

  3. Laughing at number 4 because I've never heard it before! But I totally agree, you shouldn't have to downgrade your athletes just to try to get something out of them. They should want to play for you not feel forced to play for you.
